code of conduct

We, as an organization, have written and adopted a Code of Conduct.

To report a violation of this code, please fill out this form.

We acknowledge that this is a living document and as such it will be revisited by the board annually. It will also be revisited at any time in response to an incident or at the request of a member of our community. We welcome thoughts and suggestions on this Code of Conduct at all times. If you would like to submit a suggested change, please contact us at hello@organcolossal.com.

  1. This Code of Conduct shall apply to everyone involved with Organ Colossal including all staff, board members, collaborators, and audience members.

  2. This Code of Conduct shall apply to all in-person events, including rehearsals, concerts and other gatherings, as well as to all virtual communications, including chat platforms, social media, and one-on-one communications pertaining to Organ Colossal.

  3. Everyone involved with Organ Colossal is responsible for their own self-education as it pertains to the principles laid out in this Code of Conduct. It is expected that everyone listens generously and communicates.

  4. All people we work with are entitled to a safer* workplace.

    • *A Safer Space is a balanced, healthy space where all people feel valued and respected. The term “safer” espouses an intersectional approach to the term “safe,” acknowledging that what is “safe” shifts depending on one’s various identities and positionalities. (adapted from The We Have Voice Collective Code of Conduct).  We are committed to creating safer spaces.

  5. We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, meaning all incidents of harassment will be addressed head-on and reconciled.  We will approach all incidents of harassment with a growth mindset, creating space for courageous conversations.  That said, we will also reserve the right to remove a person or persons from Organ Colossal activities immediately.  Harassment, which we acknowledge may be either deliberate or accidental/unconscious, includes but is not limited to:

    • offensive comments or actions related to any characteristics such as ability status, age, class, color, culture, education level, ethnicity, family status, gender identity or expression, immigration status, language, military service, national origin, neurodiversity, political beliefs, pregnancy, profession, race, size, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status (we acknowledge that this list cannot be exhaustive)

    • intimidation, threatening, stalking, following, or doxing

    • discriminatory “jokes” and language

    • misgendering (learn more, from The Trevor Project)

    • disruption of events, workshops, talks, or performances

    • inappropriate or unwelcome physical contact of any kind

    • unwelcome sexual or suggestive remarks

    • inappropriate and unwelcome use of imagery or offensive materials

    • microaggressions (learn more, a guide by Kevin L. Nadal)

  6. Communication

    • All persons are expected to be mindful of the effect that their words and actions may have on others and know that their boundaries may not be the same as the boundaries of others. If a person acts or speaks in a way that someone finds inappropriate, then those words or actions are inappropriate to that time, place, and/or person.  All persons are asked to remain mindful and listen always.

    • When witnessing, experiencing, or suspecting any form of harassment, all persons are expected and invited to speak up or ask for help if they’re able.  That said, it’s not always easy to speak up.  To alleviate this burden, Organ Colossal directors Sophia Vastek and Sam Torres will also routinely check in with collaborators.

  7. Organ Colossal will maintain transparent enforcement policies around accountability.

    • An anonymous form will be available at all times in order to submit information or complaints of any kind.  Form submissions will be responded to within 24 hours, with concrete actions taken to address the issue within 5 days.  Those submitting information through this form may decide to whom this information gets submitted.

  8. This Code of Conduct will be included in all Organ Colossal contracts.
